WINTER SPORT ROUND-UP

Head of Sport Mr Mark Philp updates us with all the winter sport action.

Cross Country

The 2026 season was one of the most successful in recent memory, highlighted by outstanding performances across all age groups and representative levels.

The Intermediate squad produced an exceptional campaign, finishing second in the AAGPS Premiership. The team was led by a talented group including Josh Westmoreland (III), John Wechsler (III), Charlie Naughton (III), and Craig Kelly (III), whose consistency and determination throughout the season enabled Grammar to challenge the strongest schools in the competition.

Beyond the AAGPS season, Grammar athletes continued to excel at representative level. The School was represented by an impressive fourteen athletes at the CIS Championships, with four athletes earning NSW State selection and three progressing to the Australian Cross Country Championships, a testament to the depth and quality of the programme.

Individually, Josh Westmoreland (III) enjoyed a remarkable season, highlighted by his victory in the Under 15 division of the City2Surf, one of Australia’s premier running events. His achievement reflects both his dedication and the strength of the training culture within the squad.

Finally, special recognition must go to Captain Solomon Tan (VI), whose leadership was exemplary throughout the season. Solomon led with maturity, commitment, and enthusiasm, setting a positive standard for younger athletes and helping to foster the strong team culture that underpinned the squad’s success both on and off the course.

Rugby

The 2026 rugby season saw the First XV finish fourth on the AAGPS ladder with 4 wins from 7 matches, while the 16A team claimed the Fathers’ Association Cup for the most consistent team during the season and the 13A side won the Ian Clark Anderson Memorial Cup for their resilience with a limited squad. Last-minute winners against Riverview and away at The King’s School were definite highlights of the First XV campaign.

Daniel Macri (IV) earned selection to the AAGPS Under 16 Presidents’ B Team. In the inaugural Midweek Sevens hosted at Weigall, a four-week competition against schools including Randwick Boys High School, Redlands and GOAL College, the Under 14, Under 16 and Opens Sevens sides all finished runners-up.

Other highlights included the preparatory schools’ curtain-raiser, with St Ives and Edgecliff Year 3 and 4 teams playing a seven-a-side match before the final First XV fixture against Sydney Boys High School, and the preparatory boys all training at Weigall over the school holidays with professional player Jack Bowen giving them tips. The Rugby Club had four Opens teams this year which was pleasing to see. The Form IV and V boys had a great tour to Japan and learnt a lot about rugby and Japan’s rich culture.

The season closed with the club’s end-of- year awards for the First XV: Hilton Sinton (VI) (Best Back), Liam Dimmock (VI) (Best Forward), Matthew Di Pilla (VI) (Most Improved Player), Ronan Shepherd (V) (Ironman Award), Joseph Hayes (VI) (Robert A Smith Memorial Cup for Best and Fairest), Tom Robertson (VI) (Clubman of the Year – Cooper Rice-Brading Award), and Shiv Nandan (VI) (Captain of the First XV – The Hazell Shield).

Football

The 2026 football programme enjoyed another successful season, with strong performances across the age groups. The First XI reached the Sydney FC Cup Final for the second consecutive year, facing Oakhill College and narrowly missing out in a penalty shootout. Their Plate Cup campaign was highlighted by an impressive 6–2 victory over Sydney Boys High School. They also had an outstanding GPS campaign, finishing second by just one point and losing only one of their seven matches. Grammar scored the most goals and conceded the fewest in the competition.

Michael Klein (V) and Fraser Rowan (VI) were selected in the GPS Representative Team, recognising their outstanding performances throughout the season.

The Second XI’s standout win of the season came away against St Joseph’s College, producing some fantastic finishes in an impressive 3–0 victory. Several age groups across the programme also enjoyed particularly successful seasons. The 14A, 14B and 15D teams all completed their seasons undefeated, with the 14B team remarkably conceding just one goal throughout the season.

Overall, the 2026 season was another positive year for Grammar football, highlighted by strong team performances, representative honours and continued development throughout the programme.

Fencing

Our fencers once again enjoyed a highly successful season, achieving outstanding results at both State and National level competitions. In the NSW Schools’ League, Grammar won gold in the U14B, U16B, U19A and U19B divisions, and silver in the U14A and U16A divisions, securing the NSW Schools’ League Shield for Best Overall School. In the NSW Roberta Nutt individual tournament, Ryan Zhu (V) claimed gold in the U19 category, with Ethan He (V) taking silver. In the U16 division, Lucas Zhang (IV) earned silver and Joshua Fung (III) bronze.

At the Australian Schools Fencing Championships in Melbourne, Grammar’s Intermediate A team were crowned national champions, while the Intermediate B team placed second. The School also won the WJ Ronald Cup for National Champion School in foil, with the Firsts winning the gold and the Seconds bronze. In the Senior individual competition, Grammar swept the podium: Ethan He won gold, Jasper Li (V) silver, and Ryan Zhu bronze. These exceptional results reinforce Sydney Grammar School’s position as the leading school fencing programme in Australia.

Taekwondo

The 2026 taekwondo season concluded with great success for our boys. Our First V team for 2026 consisted of captain Caspar Dive (VI), Will Errington (VI), Oliver Shen (V), Jimmy Luo (IV), and Preston Tran (IV). Throughout the season, these boys demonstrated determination and resilience, battling their way to a well-earned second-place finish on the ladder and securing a place in the final. In a closely contested championship match, they narrowly fell 3-2 to St Aloysius, but their efforts throughout the season were outstanding.

At the All-Schools competition, a strong combination of junior and senior fighters faced opponents from a wide range of schools. Their collective performance saw them claim the All-Schools Palkhe Cup for the third consecutive year, a remarkable achievement and testament to the strength of the programme.

This season also marked the introduction of a junior sparring competition in a First V format, which is set to be formally established next year. Congratulations to all involved. The boys finish the season with many memorable experiences, significant achievements, and plenty of excitement for what lies ahead in 2027.

Volleyball

The volleyball season saw the development of some outstanding athletes, with six boys selected for State teams: Dominic Fuller (II) U15, James Guo (V) U17, Connor Stoermer, Angus Sharpe and Marcus Yan Wang (all V) U18, and Ashton Clarke (VI) U19. Angus, Marcus and Ashton also helped the CIS Representative team secure an undefeated championship at the All Schools Tri-Series in May, defeating CHS and CCC. Joined by Connor, they then represented GPS in a 3-1 victory over CAS. Ashton was also selected for Volleyball Australia’s national programme. In the GPS Competition, the First and Second teams both placed third in their respective grades behind The Scots College and Sydney Boys High School, who shared the premiership in each division. The competition reached its peak in the final round, where the Second team rallied from two sets down to force High into a fifth and deciding set. Captained by Brock Soedirdja (VI), the First team produced its best volleyball of the season, combining professionalism and tactical discipline, and finishing just one point behind the premiership winner. The programme’s depth was also evident in the younger age groups, with four teams completing the season undefeated.

Rifles

A combination of rigorous indoor laser, dry firing at College Street mid-week and live firing on the weekends at Hornsby Rifle Range put the rifle club in good stead for the AAGPS competition in 2026. Our inexperienced shooters developed marksmanship skills on the .22 rifle while our senior shooters concentrated on the big bore.

During the last week of the Term II holidays, a camp was conducted at Hornsby with twenty-four boys from the big bore squad. At the end of the week, we analysed the boy’s performances and statistics before selecting eighteen boys to go to the GPS Competition.

Congratulations to the Seconds Rifles for successfully defending their premiership. In the process of doing so, they beat their score from last year by twenty points and set a new GPS record and statistically beat the scores of all the other GPS Firsts teams.

Our First Rifles defended their premiership, bettering last year’s results by winning all three competitions in a clean sweep and claiming the title of a Championship team. This is the third consecutive year the Firsts have won the premiership.

Having performed so well as a team at the GPS Competition, six of our boys from the Firsts were selected into the GPS Combined Team: Ian Bierer (VI), Yesung Cho (VI), Yoon Sung Cho (IV), Christopher Sevastos (VI) (and Captain of the GPS team), Gabriel Song (VI) and Matthew Wong (VI).

Athletics

The 2026 athletics season was distinguished by record participation, strong performances and a growing sense of enthusiasm throughout the squad. Grammar’s most ambitious pre-season programme to date produced immediate results, with 106 boys competing at the opening invitational and 126 across the first two weekends.

Captain Andrew Rae (VI) won the Open 110m Hurdles Championship at the third invitational in a School record 15.10 seconds. Jeremy Lenthen (III) won the U15 400m and 800m at the opening meet, while Alexander Hu (IV), Owen Hurst (V) and Kobe Chee (I) recorded victories. Lachy Webster (VI) placed second in the Open 400m and broke two minutes for the 800m.

At the final invitational at ES Marks, Bryant Diep (IV) won the U16 200m in 23.86 seconds and Sam Braund (I) won his U13 400m division, while Andrew Kay (VI), Daniel Macri (IV) and Justin Jung (II) placed second in their events.

Seventy-two athletes were selected for the 130th AAGPS Championships where Grammar achieved 21 placings (two gold, eleven silver, eight bronze), up from 13 in 2025. The team scored 732 points, its best total in seven years, continuing a steady rise from around 620 in 2022 and 2023 to 719 in 2024 and 726 in 2025. Daniel Macri (IV) cleared 1.91m to win the U16 High Jump and Jayden Chong (II) won the U14 Long Jump. James Amoils (VI) took silver in the Open 400m, with further silver medals to John Coutts (III), Jeremy Lenthen (III), Bryant Diep (IV), Felix Loeffel (III) and Justin Jung (II). With Andrew Rae unable to compete, Andrew Kay (VI) claimed bronze in the Open 110m Hurdles, while Angus Windeyer (VI) and Owen Hurst (V) also won bronze. The U15 4x100m and Intermediate 4x400m relay teams won bronze in new School record times.

The boys supported one another enthusiastically, and Grammar’s supporters, led by the new Prefects and the School band, challenged for best-supported school for the first time, reflecting the positive culture within Grammar athletics.
