THE TIES THAT BIND

Old Sydneians continue to reunite and rekindle their friendships, forged during their school years at Grammar.

GPS Bowls

After six rounds of bowls and one washed out, Grammar remained undefeated, winning the 2025 GPS Bowls Championship. The event has been contested for over 70 years, arguably the longest continuous lawn bowls competition still active.

Inaugural Gold Sydneians’ Lunch

Former President of the OSU Walter MacCallum (OS 1987) welcomed the group and Bob Wagner (OS 1986) gave a wonderful speech relating to his strong Sydney Grammar School connection as an Old Sydneian, master and parent. The next event will be held on Friday 17 July 2026.

Old boys connecting

Melbourne

We are most grateful to Tony Johnston (OS 1955), who has assisted our Melbourne-based Old Sydneians for many years. Dr Sebastian King (OS 1993) and Jonathan Isaacs (OS 1984) are now available to help with alumni gatherings and activities.

Canada

Similarly, Rob Lesnie (OS 1970) has volunteered to assist any alumni living in Canada, who want to connect. Rob worked as a mechanical engineer for many years in Vancouver and he is now retired and enjoying his cruising sailboat. A postcard describing his life is published in this magazine.

Old Sydneian in the spotlight

Felix Wallis (OS 2015) graduated with First Class Honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2021, where he studied composition with Carl Vine and Ben Carey. Recently he was selected as the 2026 Layton Emerging Composer Fellow with the Australia Ensemble UNSW, including a commission to write a new work under the mentorship of Paul Stanhope.

His music spans chamber and electroacoustic formats. In 2024, Felix composed Rewilding for Omega Ensemble’s CoLAB programme, which premiered at the Sydney Opera House. His Four Preludes were recorded by Grammar alumnus Rob Hao (OS 2017) in 2023. He plays synths in improvised ambient trio Aquatint and his instrumental-electronic ensemble Miniflora is releasing an EP this year.

Felix was nominated as Emerging Screen Composer of the Year at the 2025 APRA AMCOS Screen Music Awards. He has arranged strings for artists including The Kid LAROI and composed for the Ministry of Sound Classical 2025 tour. He has also written the sonic logos for IKEA, Westfield, and Zoos Victoria.

50 Year Football Celebration

Kymbal Dunne (OS 1978) organised a wonderful gathering at the end of November 2025 to celebrate over 50 years of Sydney Grammar School Football (soccer). Three of the original coaches, Mr Don Schumacher, Mr Michael Bromfield and Mr Harvey Hamilton attended and gave speeches, which helped to clarify what really happened during the first decade of Grammar football. Tom Alexakis, the current coach of the Second XI, subsequently described how healthy the state of football is at present at College Street with over 33 teams actively competing against other schools. About 20 Old Sydneians from the 1970’s listened respectfully to their old masters before providing some entertaining anecdotes of their own.

It was a great evening and many thanks to Kymbal for all his efforts in staging such a successful gathering at the Tattersall’s Club.
