Hong Kong Orchestra Tour

Tour Coordinator Mr Alasdair Gyngell reports on a stimulating and inspiring combined Preparatory Schools orchestra tour to this vibrant metropolis.

Last September, eighty boys and sixteen staff from St Ives and Edgecliff travelled to Hong Kong for a week-long orchestra tour – performing at schools across the city and enjoying an unforgettable cultural experience… even with a super typhoon in the middle of it.

The tour brought together boys from Years 5 and 6 across both campuses, who had auditioned earlier in the year before beginning preparations for the trip. Rehearsals were held throughout the year as the combined ensemble worked on a programme of orchestral and choral pieces. From the outset, the boys approached the opportunity with enthusiasm and commitment, quickly developing into a confident and cohesive ensemble.

Despite the disruption caused by the approaching typhoon – which unfortunately led to the cancellation of two scheduled concerts – the boys were still able to perform at several schools across Hong Kong. Highlights included concerts at Harrow International School, the Australian International School, and Discovery Bay International School. Each performance was warmly received, and it was a pleasure to share the boys’ music with local students across the city.

When the typhoon kept us indoors for a day, some quick thinking led to one of the most memorable moments of the tour. With the support of the hotel, an impromptu concert for guests and staff was organised in one of the hotel’s function spaces. Without music stands and with limited space, the boys delivered an energetic performance that was warmly appreciated by those in attendance – an experience that will no doubt be remembered for years to come.

Beyond the performances, the boys also enjoyed a wide range of cultural experiences across the city. Visits included the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, reached via the spectacular Ngong Ping cable car, as well as the famous Peak Tram and panoramic views from Victoria Peak. The group also explored the Hong Kong Space Museum, created their own custom cup noodles at the Cup Noodles Museum, and burned off some energy at Ryze Trampoline Park.

One of the boys’ favourite experiences, however, was exploring the vibrant night markets, where they enthusiastically practised their haggling skills while searching for gifts and souvenirs.

Throughout the week, the boys represented the School with pride – both on stage and off. It was heartening to see how the shared experiences of rehearsing, performing, travelling and exploring together strengthened the bond between the Edgecliff and St Ives Preparatory boys. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and respectful conduct made them a pleasure to accompany, and the tour was a wonderful celebration of music, friendship and discovery.
