Acting Director of Sport Mr Mark Philp updates us with all the winter sport action.
It was Grammar’s most successful performance for some time at the AAGPS Championships, with sixty-two personal bests achieved by our athletes. The Junior team came third in its division and featured a number of strong individual performances. Jeremy Lenthen (II) broke the School record in winning the U14 400m, and he also took out the 800m event. Leo Print (I) finished second in the U13 400m and third in the 800m, while Jayden Chong (I) finished second in the U13 long jump. In the Intermediate category, Alex Hu (III) ran an eight-second personal best to win the U15 800m, while Angus Windeyer (V) took second in the U16 200m. In the Open division, Dexter Staley (V) won the U17 high jump, and Jackson Dyne (VI) placed third in the Open high jump.
In a season where all three squads improved significantly on last season’s efforts, the Junior squad stood out. The Juniors topped the points tally to win the AAGPS Junior premiership, which was quite an achievement, given that the team lost Craig Kelly (II), a top-four runner, to injury, but managed to maintain its premiership lead across several weeks to secure the title. A junior Grammar team (Charlie Naughton, Josh Westmoreland, John Wechsler (all II), and Maran Rajeev (III)) also won the CIS U14 championship race at Hurlstone Park. Finally, a word about captain Julian Wylie (VI), who led the team so well throughout the season, both on and off the course.
Winter Cross-Sport offered the boys a variety of games, including European handball, touch rugby and Ultimate Frisbee, along with the most popular activities – pickleball and table tennis. The senior group competed hard, especially in Ultimate Vortex, where throwing technique and game awareness were particularly important. The junior group proved to be adept at team strategising in games such as capture the flag.
Our fencers again found significant success this competition season with Grammar’s First team winning the U18 division in the NSW AJ Rae Competition, and our Intermediate As and Bs coming second and third respectively in the U16 category. In the NSW Roberta Nutt Competition for individuals, Ryan Zhu (IV) won the U18s and Ethan He (IV) came third. In the U16s, Lucas Zhang (III) placed third.
Grammar performed very well in the NSW Schools League, becoming the first school to win all three ‘A’ competitions in winning the shield for the best overall team achievement. At Nationals, Grammar’s Intermediate A team finished first, while the Intermediate Bs placed third. The School won the WJ Ronald Cup for National Champion School in foil after the First team won the senior division and our Seconds finished third. In the Senior Individual category, Ryan Zhu placed second and Lucas Zhang third, with Grammar fielding five of the top ten fencers.
Despite having to endure a number of washouts this season, there was plenty of success in the 2025 football programme. The First XI had a strong season, losing just twice. The Firsts reached the Sydney FC Cup final, falling to Oakhill College in a penalty shootout, and was runner-up in the Plate Cup against The Scots College in another game decided on penalties.
Jonty Snyman and Rufus McGuinness (both VI) were selected in the GPS representative team. Rufus went on to play on the national stage, representing the New South Wales Schoolboys XI at the Australian Schoolboys Championships in Brisbane. Rufus played a pivotal role in New South Wales’ undefeated run to win the championship, and he thoroughly deserved his subsequent selection in the Australian Schoolboys XI.
Several age groups in the programme enjoyed exceptional seasons. The U13s scored a staggering one hundred and seventy-seven goals, while conceding only sixty, with the 13A and 13B teams going through undefeated. The 16Bs and 14Bs also had undefeated seasons. Overall, Grammar football in 2025 won two hundred and eight matches, lost fifty-eight, and drew twenty-eight times.
After last season’s premiership win, fifty boys applied to take part in the rifle shooting programme this season, doubling the usual number of applicants. This season’s rain interruptions brought all sorts of challenges, but after weeks of training, the squad of eighteen shooters selected for GPS competition achieved some outstanding successes. The Second team won its premiership, the first win for Grammar in this division since 2007; and the First team defended its 2024 premiership, giving Grammar its first dual title win since 1975.
Captain Christopher Sevastos (V) was announced as the non-shooting Captain of the Combined GPS team, and four of our boys – Ian Bierer, Yesung Cho, Jacky Dong and Matthew Wong (all V) – were selected to shoot for this representative team.
The First XV team had a tough GPS season, but finished with a fine win against Sydney Boys High School. Noah Dekell (VI) earned the Robert A Smith Memorial Cup for Best and Fairest Player, while Will Egger (VI) won the Cooper Rice Brading Award for Clubman of the Year. Charlie Lieutenant’s (VI) outstanding leadership as Captain of the Rugby Club was recognised with the Hazell Shield. The highlight of the season was the 13As in not only winning the Ian Clark Anderson Memorial Cup, but also going through its season undefeated, and, in so doing, winning the Fathers’ Association Cup.
Congratulations to Thomas Delaney and Ronan Shepherd (both IV) for winning selection to the GPS President’s team, and to Noah Dekell for being chosen for the Open GPS Blue team.
It has been a hugely successful season for Grammar’s Taekwondo squad, from the junior fighters on through to the First Five, this year comprised of Preston Tran (III); Caspar Dive and Will Errington (both V); and Felix Smith and captain James Young (both VI). The First Five achieved strong results all season, finishing second to Shore School in the competition proper before beating Shore 3-2 in the final to win the premiership. Nathanael Cosman (V) took the place of the injured Preston Tran in the final. In the other major title, the All-Schools competition, Grammar won seven gold medals in successfully defending the All-Schools Cup, which the School won in 2024.
The Taekwondo fighters’ wonderful spirit and resilience, along with James Young’s inspirational leadership, played significant parts in the squad’s successes this season.
Grammar fielded twenty-one volleyball teams this year. Justin Jung (I), Ivan Wang (II), Jack Mason (III) and Adrian Kalantzis (IV) were honoured at season’s end for their exceptional play. In the Open division, the standout players included Ashton Clarke (V) and Marcus Levison (VI), who were selected for the GPS representative team. Ashton and Aden Tay (V) won selection to the CIS squad, with Ashton further distinguishing himself by earning a place on the U18 Australian team, which competed in Thailand earlier this year.
The First and Second teams showcased exceptional skills in a number of spectacular matches throughout the season. Led by captain Marcus Levison, the First team finished third on the GPS ladder, always demonstrating strength and composure, and particularly so in its match against Newington College. The Second team came close to winning the premiership, in a season highlighted by a history-making victory over Sydney Boys High School.
