Assistant Headmaster (Senior Housemaster) Mr Craig Johnston commends the character contribution that this year’s Prefects have made to school life.
The Prefects of 2025 are rapidly approaching the end of their days as pupils at College Street. As the intensity of events and examinations increases, they still have a range of duties and expectations placed upon their shoulders. This is a reminder to us all that the School encourages everyone to view the role of a Prefect at Sydney Grammar School as one of service, commitment and duty. It is not a reward for earlier service, loyalty or prominence of any kind.
Indeed, the boys are largely chosen by vote from among their peers and those who stand out in the vote are invited to apply for the job. That this year’s cohort of Prefects stand out as a fine team is not only a testament to the process by which they were chosen but also a result of their own virtues which they have brought to the job.
The Yearbook was completed with earnestness. The raffle attracted amazing prizes. There have been a range of tournaments on offer for younger boys to compete in and one must not forget the annual SCEGGS Prefects basketball match. They made close connections with other schools’ leadership teams. After the Trial Examinations, they organised a trivia afternoon for Form VI and masters. The Prefects have been most generous in their outlook. This was especially evident in making Dignity their charity of choice. Dignity’s aim is to empower people at risk of experiencing homelessness.
