It was a tough season for our First and Second basketballers, who managed only four wins collectively from twenty-eight GPS competition games. The first-round trip to Sydney Boys High School, though, produced wins for both teams, the first time we’ve done this in over fifteen years. The Firsts won by seven points, while the Seconds came from eighteen points down late in the third quarter to win by six.

It was a great season, though, for Jack Lacy-Smith (VI), who was selected for the second year running in the GPS First representative team, something no Grammar player has achieved in over twenty years. Jeremy Lenthen (II) also had a strong summer, becoming the first Form II player in more than ten years to win selection in the First team.

The U13s was the most successful age group, and the 16Cs was the most successful team, finishing with eleven wins and two losses. This follows last season’s outstanding season for the undefeated 15Cs.

Cricket

A number of strong performances from the 13A, 14A and 15A teams, combined with competitive results and strong participation in the lower grades, made for a highly successful 2024/25 cricket season.

The First XI won ten matches to finish third in the AAGPS competition, which is the second time in the past three seasons that the First XI has achieved a top-three finish. The Firsts also won this year’s Tri-Grammar Shield and the historic ‘Bat’ game, both trophies being secured by captain Jonty Snyman’s (VI) outstanding catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary. This was SGS’s first Tri-Grammar Shield win since 2020.

Myles Kapoor’s (V) individual achievements should be acknowledged here. Myles scored a century against St Joseph’s College, before heading to Launceston to play in the National U17 Championship, where another Kapoor century helped NSW win the championship title.

Myles was selected in the AAGPS XI for the second consecutive year and was picked to represent CIS at the NSW State Championships, where his impressive performances won him a place in the NSW Schoolboys team to play Queensland in September.

Cross-Sport

A highlight of the summer season’s Cross-Sport programme was table tennis, which was played in the John Vallance Hall. The boys enjoyed this module immensely, and a lot of improvement was apparent in players who took Cross-Sport last year. The other four-week modules in the programme were pickleball (David Phillips Field, Daceyville), golf (Moore Park Golf Club), swimming (Prince Alfred Park Pool), and multi-sport activities at Weigall and Rushcutters Bay, including capture the flag, Ultimate Frisbee, touch football and kickball.

Taekwondo (Summer)

The season began with grading for some of our competition fighters after a hugely successful winter season. The Taekwondo summer squad trained this past season as they always do – with admirable focus, enthusiasm and energy.

Rowing

The 2024/25 season was a strong one for the junior shed, with five B-final wins at the All-Schools regatta and participation numbers at an all-time high. Grammar sent a Year 10 VIII to the Melbourne Head of the River regatta for the first time, where it took third place in a competitive field of over twenty crews from across Australia. Four Grammar Year Ten VIIIs raced at the AAGPS Head of the River, which bodes well for the depth of our senior squad next summer.

All Grammar’s senior crews recorded season-best times at the Head of the River. Four of our First VIII rowers – Curtis Pepper, James Fifield, Toby Berkelouw and Charlie Slack (all VI), along with coxswain Ian Bierer (V) – won gold in the U19 Coxed IV event at the National Rowing Championships in Barrington, Tasmania, the first time since 1994 that a Grammar crew has won this prestigious race. It was an impressive performance, with the crew comfortably winning their heat and semi-final on the way to an emphatic victory in the final.

Swimming

Swimming The 2025 Grammar swim team has had a tremendous season in the pool, with the Junior team finishing second and the Intermediate team third at GPS Carnival 5. The highlight of the carnival was the All Age 6 × 50 freestyle relay. The Grammar team – Hudson Duong (I), Aiden Nosratieh (II), Derek Lin (II) Joseph Braund (III), Jonathan Cheng (V) and Captain of Swimming William Chung (VI) – gave everything they had to hit the wall first, two seconds ahead of the field.

Standout individual performances in the Junior squad came from Hudson Duong, who won the U12 50m freestyle; Hugo Jones (I), who placed second in the U13 50m butterfly; and Aiden Nosratieh, second in the U13 50m freestyle. Our U13 and U14 medley and freestyle teams enjoyed success all season. Derek Lin, Andrew Zhang (II), Jonah Jo (II) and Bowen Xia (III) will represent the GPS as a team at the CIS tournament. Hudson, Hugo, Derek, Andrew and Jonah have qualified for CIS in their individual events, as have Ethan Cui (I) and Nate Graf (II).

In the Intermediate category, Joseph Braund won the U15 50m and U15 100m freestyle events in his age group, Tristan Ma (III) won the U15 50m butterfly, and Mark Chung (III) came third in the U15 50m backstroke. All three boys have won GPS representation for these events. The freestyle relay team consisting of Joseph, Tristan, Callum Lee (IV) and Jonathan Cheng will represent the GPS as a team at CIS.

In the Senior division, breaststroke specialist Ian Kim (V) was our standout swimmer. Ian has been selected to represent the GPS in the U17 50m breaststroke and U17 200m individual medley events.

Tennis

Across all age groups, Sydney Grammar won over eighty percent of its tennis matches during the 2024/25 season, and the U14 teams went through the season undefeated.

The Second team is young, but it will return stronger for the experiences the players had last summer. This is especially true for those Seconds players called up to replace injured First team players during the season. A fourth-place finish was not an accurate reflection of the Second team’s ability, but the team is well placed now for higher achievement next season.

The First team, well captained by James Prestwich (VI) and his effortless onehanded backhand, won twice against teams who finished in the top four of the GPS competition, proving that there is indeed very little between the top five schools in ability and commitment. Lucas Lin (IV), our top-ranked player, was ranked third in the GPS, and won representative honours for the second consecutive year.
