Grammar Life launches

Director of Grammar Life Mr Alasdair Gyngell reports on how this popular new programme is enriching school life for St Ives boys.

At the start of Term I 2025, St Ives Preparatory School launched Grammar Life, a dynamic extracurricular programme that has quickly become an integral part of the School community. Built on the foundation of the School’s commitment to holistic education, Grammar Life is a natural extension of what makes St Ives special – offering boys high-quality opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills and engage with expert-led experiences across sport, arts and STEM subjects.

With over 30 activities running before and after school, alongside holiday camps, Grammar Life has been met with enthusiasm and excitement from the boys. The diverse offerings range from archery, skateboarding, fencing and badminton to creative writing, Mandarin, entrepreneurship and improvisation, as well as robotics, coding, photography and cooking. A key strength of the programme is its collaboration with expert external providers, ensuring boys receive specialist instruction from professionals in their respective fields. Whether it’s national level sport coaches, award-winning authors, accomplished artists or industry experts in STEM, each session is led by those who bring real-world experience into the school setting.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with 91 percent of boys enrolling in at least one activity in Semester 1. Demand was so high that many activities filled within minutes of registrations opening. Families have welcomed the convenience of an extensive onsite programme, eliminating the need to travel across Sydney for extracurricular activities or fill up weekends with additional classes.

Looking ahead, Grammar Life will continue to grow, expanding into holiday excursions, camps and tours, further enriching boys’ learning experiences beyond the classroom. Additionally, Guest Speaker events and lectures will introduce boys to inspiring figures from various fields, including Old St Ives boys returning to share their journeys.

With the support of dedicated staff, expert providers and an engaged school community, Grammar Life is already enriching life at St Ives. As the programme continues to develop, it will remain focused on providing meaningful, well-rounded opportunities that encourage every boy to discover new passions, build confidence and embrace new challenges.
