It is a pleasure to reflect on the role Mrs Becky Lovelock has played here at College Street since her appointment to the School as a Mathematics master in Term IV of 2017. Indeed, it was the stuff of utter serendipity that Becky came to Grammar at all, seconded as she was then to NESA and thus on a year’s leave of absence from her permanent role as Head of Mathematics at Brigidine College.

Becky joined us to take on a single term of Long Service Leave cover having lost patience with the bureaucracy she encountered in her recently seconded environment. It quickly became clear to me that NESA’s loss was most certainly Grammar’s gain.

Midway through that Term IV she applied for, and was successful in gaining, the role of Assistant Headmaster (Academic). In early 2020, Becky stepped up in adverse circumstances to assume the role of Acting Deputy Headmaster (Academic) helping to lead the School through that most challenging of times (some boys will remember the invention of the “Black and Gold Timetable” as a method of staggering numbers in the playground, which was one of Becky’s creations). Later, she would carry on with that Deputy Headship in a permanent capacity.

In her various roles, Becky has had a very substantial and positive impact upon the life and development of the School. A few years ago she offered to take the lead as we commenced a full school, three campus review of our Strategic Direction. She also pioneered the now well established Ithaka Lecture series, recently interviewing Julie Bishop as part of the Ithaka programme.

In 2023 Becky, in conjunction with Dr Alexander Stevens, led Grammar’s response to the rise of generative AI setting our early strategic thinking and response to that equally fascinating yet uncertain new computational horizon. Becky has long been a champion of women in leadership and has on occasions addressed AISNSW on this topic.

Indeed, it was clear to me from the moment I met her that Becky was destined to become a Head, and Pocklington School in Yorkshire is very lucky to have secured her. We wish her every success.
