What’s been going on at College Street?

Ms Sharon Ditmarsch provides an update on developments and events in our community.

We have a Sustainability Director

The newly created role of Sustainability Director at Sydney Grammar School has been taken up by Mr Geoff Carroll. Geoff joined us ten years ago as a Mathematics master, after a long career working in environmental and commodity markets at Macquarie Bank. He is passionate about using data to make evidencebased decisions to improve environmental outcomes and how schools can integrate environmental initiatives into the curriculum. Geoff has commissioned a solar feasibility study for installation at College Street and a detailed energy audit of assets with a view to reducing energy consumption. A Sustainability Committee has been formed and is tasked with producing a Sustainability Roadmap for the School. The Environment Club for boys will be rebooted this year.

Geoff has a Permaculture Design Certificate and his house – winner of the National Sustainability Awards in 2016 – featured in Gardening Australia in 2020.

Our Associations are working hard

The SGSWA has been running Form events in Big School throughout the term and a number of gatherings offsite. At the end of Term I the SGSFA hosted an evening for College Street staff and the Fathers’ Association are looking forward to our home game barbecues during the winter season. The Parents and Friends of the Boat Club Association were relentless in their support for the rowers and it has been a pleasure to work with the dedicated parents in the Music Association.

Reunions

I am pleased to report the Alumni Office has locked in reunions for 1963, 1967, 1968, 1973, 1993 and 2003 Old Sydneians. We look forward to facilitating the opportunity for Old Boys to come together at College Street.

The Head of the River send off

There is always a buzz around the School on the eve of the Head of the River. The crews and summer sport colours are presented at the School Assembly, and then the crews are rallied on as they take the slow march across the playground to depart for race day. It is one of those traditions that defines our School.

AAGPS summer sport concludes

A first for sometime, we were able to celebrate the end of the summer sport season with formal dinners for competitors, coaches and parents. The occasion marks a significant milestone for the boys, an acknowledgment of their contribution and achievements after a long, intense and challenging competition. Congratulations to the Second tennis team who finished Premiers for 2023.

Concerts, drama and Friday afternoons

In our corner block in the city CBD you only need to be here on a Friday night when we have a home debate in the Palladium, a reunion in Big School, a drama performance in the Alastair Mackerras Theatre, chess, social debating and Cadets to be impressed with how much goes on in this space. We look forward to seeing you at College Street or on the sideline for our home games during winter sport at Weigall.
