Mathematics

By providing engaging and rigorous programmes, we seek to develop each boy’s mathematical thinking, understanding, competence and confidence.

Mathematical units of work allow boys the time to investigate, practise and apply new knowledge, skills and understanding. The investigations incorporate hands-on learning experiences, to encourage boys’ mathematical thinking, and are often contextual, demonstrating how mathematics is applied in the real world. Problem solving is at the core of each unit; challenging scenarios are designed to engage boys with mathematical concepts and investigations, and the opportunity to develop suitable strategies when solving problems.

While we recognise the value of inquiry-based learning, we also place value on consolidating fundamental skills and concepts. Regular practice of computation and clear, precise setting out of written mathematical work are encouraged so that solutions reflect logical mathematical thinking.
