The teaching and learning of mathematics is a priority and our impressive results indicate that the boys are capable of working beyond the relevant grade levels.
The traditional mathematical skills and the mechanics of formal arithmetic are still taught at Edgecliff. Drill and practice of algorithms and number facts has its place here. We also recognise that imagination and the development of mathematical thinking is very important and the boys investigate topics in detail and through a problem solving approach.
As part of these investigations we incorporate the use of concrete materials, open ended activities and the teaching of specific problem solving strategies.
