Sports Awards and Colours

Colours and other awards are given to participants in various official School sports according to the criteria set out below. The Headmaster makes the final determination and reserves the right to grant or withhold awards on exceptional grounds as he sees fit regardless of the published criteria which may also be altered at any time without notice.

Recommendations for awards are made by a Colours Committee of three experienced masters, chaired by the Sports Master. Nominations are made to the Committee by senior coaches and masters in charge of individual sports.

Cricket, Rugby, Soccer, Basketball and Tennis (other than Winter Tennis) awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for memberhip of a GPS First Team, GPS Second Team or GPS Third team or for membership of the Grammar First Team for 3 years (subject to very high standard of performance over the season in the latter three categories)..

Colours with Merit for membership of a GPS Second Team not awarded Honour Badge or for outstanding leadership (for example as team captain of First Team) or for two years membership of the Grammar First team.

Colours for participation in four official Grammar Firsts matches (usually GPS competition matches) for a substantial part of the game

Half Colours with Merit for participation in three Grammar First official matches (usually GPS competition matches), for participation in 4 official matches (usually GPS competition matches) of a team winning the GPS Seconds Premiership or for outstanding leadership (for example as team captain of a Second Team).

Half Colours for participation in four official Grammar Seconds matches (usually GPS competition matches) for a substantial part of the game.

Games Pennant for participation in fewer than 4 official Grammar Seconds matches (usually GPS competition matches) or for a high standard of work as team manager, referee or other ancillary helper.

 

BASKETBALL

Honour Badge for membership of GPS First Team, GPS Second Team or for membership of the Grammar First Team for three years (subject to very high standard of performance over the season in the latter three categories).

Colours with Merit for membership of GPS Second Team not awarded Honour Badge or for outstanding leadership (for example as team captain of First Team) or for two years membership of the Grammar First team.

Colours for participation in eight official Grammar Firsts matches (usually GPS competition matches) for a substantial part of the game.

Half Colours with Merit for participation in less than eight Grammar First official matches (usually GPS competition matches),, for participation in eight official matches (usually GPS competition matches) of a team winning the GPS Seconds Premiership or for outstanding leadership (for example as team captain of a Second Team).

Half Colours for participation in  eight official Grammar Seconds matches (usually GPS competition matches) for a substantial part of the game.

Games Pennant for participation in less than eight official Grammar Seconds matches (usually GPS competition matches),  or for a high standard of work as team manager, referee or other ancillary helper.

 


Rowing awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for membership of winning Grammar First VIII in the GPS Head of the River or (subject to high standard of performance while in the crew) membership of Grammar First VIII for 3 years.or (subject to high standard of performance while in the crew) membership of GPS First VIII

Colours with Merit (where an Honour Badge has not been awarded) for membership of a Grammar First VIII that finishes first or runner-up at the GPS Head of the River or two years' membership of the Grammar First VIII or for outstanding leadership by the Captain of Boats.

Colours for membership of Grammar First VIII in GPS Head of the River.

Half Colours with Merit for membership of GPS premiership winning Grammar Second VIII or for outstanding leadership (for example as captain)

Half Colours for membership of Grammar Second VIII in GPS Head of the River.

Games Pennant for membership of a GPS premiership winning Grammar IV


Athletics awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for winning an Open Championship event (subject to high standard of performance) , or winning two Under 17 Championship events (subject to high standard of performance).

Colours with Merit for winning an Open Division event, winning  an Under 17 Championship event, or for outstanding leadership by the Open Team Captain.

Colours for membership of an Open team (subject to high level of commitment shown by participation in lead up carnivals and weekly training sessions).

Half Colours with Merit for winning of an Under 17 Division event.

Half Colours for membership of Under 17 Team or membership of an Open Team not eligible for Colours.

Games Pennant for winning a GPS Carnival event in a category junior to Under 17, or (subject to very high standard) a  minor place getter at a GPS Carnival.

Note – Form VI boys competing as Under 17 Athletes are eligible for Colours.

Swimming awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for: First place at the CIS carnival in an individual senior event; or First place or outstanding performance at the NSW All Schools Championships. This award is only open to boys in Form IV and above.

Colours with Merit for: First place in two senior events in which GPS Premiership points are at stake; or Membership of the SGS First Relay team if it has won at least two events; or Selection in the GPS representative Senior team for an individual event; or Breaking the relevant SGS record in any event at the NSW All Schools Championships. This award is only open to boys in Form IV and above.

Colours for: Membership of the SGS Senior team at GPS Carnival 5; or Participation in the SGS First Relay at three or more GPS carnivals.

Half Colours for: Participation as a member of the SGS Senior team in at least two events in which GPS Premiership points are at stake; or Participation in the SGS First Relay team event at two GPS carnivals; or Breaking the relevant SGS record in any event at the NSW All Schools Championships. This award is only open to boys in Forms II and III.

Games Pennant for: Selection in the GPS representative team (but without being a member of the SGS Senior team); or Selection in the SGS First Relay team (but without being a member of the SGS Senior team). Note: Senior refers to the 17 and 18 year old age groups.


Rifle Shooting awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for selection to the representative GPS Team or for outstanding performance in the Grammar First Team.

Colours with Merit (when Honour Badge not awarded) for participation in all official GPS Championship matches for four years (subject to high standard of performance) or for such participation in one year when the Grammar First Team wins the GPS premiership or for outstanding leadership (for example as First Team captain) when Honour Badge is not awarded.

Colours for participation in at least two of the three official matches which constitute the GPS Rifle Shooting Championship.

Half Colours for participation in the official GPS match as a member of the Grammar Second Team.

Games Pennant or outstanding contribution to the sport throughout the season.

Fencing and Volleyball awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge: for membership of a SGS First team which represents NSW competing in the highest school boy national competition; or for membership of the Grammar First for 3 years (subject to a very high standard of performance as well as displaying a strong commitment to the sport).

Colours with Merit: for membership of a premiership-winning SGS First team.

Colours: for membership of the SGS First team.

Half Colours with Merit: for membership of a premiership-winning Second team.

Half Colours: for membership of the SGS Second team.

Games Pennant: for membership of a junior team that wins an approved junior title.


Cross Country awards are given as follows:

Honour Badge for membership of a Grammar Open team which wins a GPS premiership (judged on the basis of individual places at invitation meetings) or for selection in the Combined GPS representative team.

Colours with Merit for exceptional performance in invitation meetings (for boys not awarded an Honour Badge) or for outstanding leadership by the Open team Captain.

Colours for membership of the Open team who participate in at least seven designated invitation meetings including the Combined GPS Championships and whose performance is of a high standard.

Half Colours for membership of the Open team not awarded Colours who participated in at least seven designated meetings and whose performance is considered to be of a sufficiently high standard.

Games Pennant for outstanding performance in age events during the course of the season and participation in at least seven designated invitation meetings.


Referees are eligible for awards as follows:

Rugby and Football Referees
Half Colours with Merit
are awarded for outstanding leadership by the Captain of Rugby/Football Referees or gaining an ARU refereeing scholarship.

Half Colours are awarded for a referee who has obtained a recognised referee's certificate and who has refereed regularly for the School for at least three years, including games at the highest possible schoolboy level.

Games Pennant is awarded to a boy who has obtained a recognised referee's certificate and who has refereed regularly for the School in Forms V and Form VI, at the highest possible level.

The above awards are normally only given to boys in Form VI.

All other sports:

Games Pennant is awarded to a boy who has obtained a recognised referee's certificate and who has refereed regularly for the school in Form V and Form VI, at the highest possible level.
