PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The Trustees of Sydney Grammar School have for many years regarded the provision of scholarships at the School as one of their most important responsibilities.

It is the Trustees’ conviction that boys of ability and promise from any background should be able to attend the School regardless of the financial circumstances of their parents.

The intellectual quality and social diversity of the School are considerably enhanced by the scholarship programme, resulting in a more stimulating environment for all boys. To this end, the Trustees are committed to expanding the scholarship programme over time.

DETAILS OF SCHOLARSHIPS

1. Scholarships will be awarded annually if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves. These include:

  • Norman Cowper Scholarship
  • Leslie Herron Scholarship
  • Grainger Scholarship
  • Weigall Scholarship
  • Alastair Mackerras Scholarship
  • Weigall-Chase Memorial Scholarship
  • St. Ives Scholarship
  • Bruce Turnbull Scholarship
  • GFK Santow Scholarship and
  • Sydney Grammar School Entrance Scholarships

Up to twenty full scholarships remitting 100% of the tuition fee may be awarded each year if resources permit. All awards are made on the basis of academic merit and promise. Some awards (such as the Bruce Turnbull Scholarship and the GFK Santow Scholarship) are needs-based scholarships and are subject to means-testing. In every case, successful applicants will need to have sat the scholarship examination and attended an interview at the School.

Applications for scholarships commencing in 2009 have now closed. For any information, please contact Ms V. Cains on 9332 5805.

2. SIR CHARLES MACKERRAS MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP AND SYDNEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

These awards are open to boys with musical talent entering Form I from any school. In making the awards, the Trustees will take into consideration the result of the Entrance Examination, the character of the candidate and his musical talent, including his performance on an instrument. These scholarships remit 50% of fees.

Applications for music scholarships have now closed. For any information please contact Ms M. Bachmann on 9332 5895

3. MORETON ROLFE SCHOLARSHIP

This Scholarship is offered every second year to a boy in Form IV (Year 10) not currently enrolled in College Street. It is means tested and covers the full cost of tuition for two years, beginning in Form V (Year 11). The Scholar will have outstanding academic ability, show strong leadership qualities and have the potential to make a substantial contribution to the sporting, cultural and social life of the School.

Candidates must sit examinations in English and Mathematics, which will be held at the School on the morning of Thursday, 19 June 2008. The deadline for submission of application is Friday 6 June.

All enquiries should be directed to the Secretary to the Master of the Lower School, Ms V. Cains on 9332 5805 or email vmc@sydgram.nsw.edu.au.

APPLICATIONS AND EXAMINATION

All scholarships (except the Moreton Rolfe Scholarship) are awarded to boys entering Form I in 2009 and all candidates must sit for the ACER Scholarship Examination.
